The article presents material on the study of sheepskins on the histological
level in young sheep of foreign breeds: Poll Dorset, Charollais, Ile de France. Their types of
productivity are wool-and-meat, semi-fine-fleeced.
The attention to studies of the histostructure of sheep skin in relation to the quality of
the fleece and fur coat raw material is insufficient. At the same time, in the new economic
conditions, a trend has already been outlined for the development of meat sheep breeding. It
will inevitably be accompanied by the getting of a large number of sheepskins. This increases
the urgency of the problem of improving the quality of raw materials, and hence the need to
determine and justify the main criteria, methods for assessing the skin and wool of sheep and
establishing requirements for the most important traits, depending on their significance.
As a result of histological studies of the features of the commercial properties of
sheepskins, it was found that the sheepskins of young sheep of foreign selection met the requirements for sheepskin and fur raw materials and were typical fur raw materials. Particular
superiority was noted in the Ile de France breed with higher strength properties based on the
lowest ratio of the papillary and reticular layers (0,53).
Microscopic methods for studying the structure of the skin made it possible to reveal
the features of its structure more fully on the sheepskins of foreign young animals (rams) of
Poll Dorset, Charollais, and Ile de France breeds.
