The data, which was obtained during the experimental study of the parameters of the reproductive function of rams of various breeds of Russian and foreign selection, including fine-wool breeds (Dzhalginsky Merino and Russian meat Merino) and meat breeds (Charollais and Ile-de-France) was analyzed. The article presents the results of some physiological parameters and features of the hormonal state of rams of the studied breeds. The main parameters of the level and quality of semen production were studied, quantitative (volume, concentration) and qualitative (motility) characteristics of semen production of rams of different breeds during the mating season were considered. It was found that the main parameters of semen production of rams of all the studied breeds met the minimum instructional requirements, although certain interbreed differences were observed. The highest average parameters of semen production were recorded in Charollais rams. Their ejaculate volume was 1,2 ml; semen motility – 9,1 points, their concentration – 3,43 billion / ml. Similar results for all three main parameters of semen quality of semen production were demonstrated by rams of the domestic breed Dzhalginsky Merino. The lowest parameters of semen production were observed in rams of the Russian meat Merino breed. It was calculated that one average ejaculate, which was obtained from Charollais ram, could inseminate in average 37,6 head, while Dzhalginsky Merino, Ile-de-France and Russian meat Merino rams – 27,0, 20,2 and 18,3 head, respectively.
