RESULTS IN THE VARIETY STUDY OF GARDEN ROSES OF THE STAVROPOL BOTANICAL GARDEN SELECTION

Abstract

The variety study of garden roses in a botanical garden is aimed at identifying the ability of cultivars to maintain their decorative effect in the conditions of the Stavropol Upland throughout the entire growing season. The study of decorative and economic and biological features of roses allows you to reveal the potential possibilities of varieties for further use in the practice of planting trees and shrubs and gardening. The work on collecting and forming the collection of garden rose varieties  (Rosa x hybrida hort.) in the Stavropol Botanical Garden began in 1960. Over the past period, more than 1000 varieties were tested. At present, the gene pool of the rose variety collection numbers 353 varieties belonging to 15 garden groups according to the International Classification (Мodern Roses – 12, 2007). As a result of long-term observations of the garden rose collection in 2005-2006 cases of vegetative variability (kidney mutations) on variety Folklore and variety Gloriа Mundi were dеtected. The deviation from the typical signs of rose varieties manifested itself in a change in the petals color. Plants vegetatively fixed from the varieties of tea-hybrid and polyanthous  garden groups, proved to be stable and retained their new features. The bud variation of the ‘Folklore’ rose gave a new ‘Pearl of the Caucasus’ rose in color for the flower, and the bud variation of the rose ‘Gloria Mundi’ gave a new in the color of the inflorescence ‘Yanka’ rose.  Newly created varieties serve as a valuable contribution to our variety stock. In 2017, the varieties from the collection of the Stavropol Botanical Garden are registered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements with the admission of use throughout the territory of the Russian Federation.
