STATUS MONITORING OF LAWNS OF PUBLIC GARDENS IN STAVROPOL

Abstract

Nowadays, new landscaping items are created or reconstructed in Stavropol every year.
Monitoring studies of ten public gardens have shown that more and more attention is paid to
the quality of lawns, as an important element of landscape design. Many decorative elements
have lawns: alleys, flowerbeds, play spaces. The qualitative indicators of lawns are improved.
Stationary irrigation systems are installed. High-quality roll lawns are arranged. More adapted
drought-tolerant cereals (Festuca arundinacea) are more frequently used as lawnformers. On
the lawns of the public gardens, lawn grasses of the first and second quality groups are sown –
Роа pratensis, Festuca rubra, Festuca ovina, Lolium perenne. Most of the surveyed grass
stands were assessed as good and excellent lawn. One of the environmental resistance for
lawn grasses is long drought season. Stationary irrigation systems are not installed
everywhere. Some of the lawns are not watered enough and die out during long droughts. At
the same time, they lose their decorativeness, environment-forming and sanitary-and-hygienic
significance. Another negative environmental resistance is the strong shading of lawns by tree
crowns, which leads to their thinning, loss of decorativeness and the formation of dead
covering. Almost all lawns have weedy species, which increase their number with time (1-3
points of weediness). Lawn mowing does not kill perennial weeds, which have their renewal
zones below the cutting height of lawn mower. No damage to plants by insects or disease was
found. There are not so many negative man made damages, trampling, dog walking. Lawns
are regularly maintained, repaired, undersowed, re-laid and rebuilt.
