Abstract

The article deals with the factors which influence on the fecundity of sheep as an
integral indicator of reproductive capacity and, ultimately, effective reproduction and
profitability of sheep breeding in the Stavropol Territory. It is indicated that despite the high
genetic determination of this complex biological trait and its conservation, the fecundity of
sheep depends on the breed, age, mating time, estruation, the conditions of keeping and
feeding and many other factors. The considered methods of increasing the fecundity of sheep
are both genetic selection methods and practical actions which were gained from the mass
experience of local and foreign sheep breeding. The main biologically based approaches
influencing fecundity are presented: stimulation of folliculogenesis in ewes, creating
conditions for maximal implantation potential of embryos and their successful intrauterine
growth as well as getting healthy offspring and their high survivability. It is concluded that
the majority of indigenous sheep breeds have high genetically determined fecundity which
should be achieved by creating the necessary conditions.
